When to use a virtual number
Updated over 10 months ago

A virtual number is a phone number that TextUs purchases for your account. These numbers are programmed to forward incoming calls to a phone number of your choice.

When and why you'll need a virtual number

You will need a virtual number if the number that you want to use is with a service provider that we cannot text enable. Additionally, we cannot use mobile numbers because they already have SMS enabled through the carrier.

There are a few phone providers (typically VoIP) that are not compatible with the SMS services that TextUs provides. To find out if your phone number can be used for TextUs services, contact our Support team.

A virtual number is also a good option if your users are located in different countries because they provide the option to utilize almost any area code. This means that if you have staff working remotely, a virtual number will allow them to text to where you provide service and help you maintain a local presence.

We can also set up your account with a virtual toll free number or upgrade your account handle high volume traffic. However, it's important to note that toll free numbers do not currently have MMS capabilities.
