August Updates: Chrome Extension 4.0

Updated this week

Chrome Extension 4.0

This new version of our Chrome extension delivers all-around improvements, including faster load times, smoother navigation, and a more responsive experience. The extension has automatically updated to this new version; no manual update is required.

Due to the update, your extension settings may have been reset. For how to check and ensure all features you’d like to use are turned on, please see this guide.

You may notice a new permissions message from Chrome when enabling the updated version. While it may look alarming, it does not represent a change in how our extension operates, only in how Chrome now displays permissions.

What’s changing and why you see this message:

  • Our extension has always needed permission to “read and change data on websites” so it can detect phone numbers in your browser, which is required to enable click-to-text and support Find Numbers.

  • The extension inserts a small piece of HTML into the page you’re viewing to display the TextUs icon next to phone numbers. No other data is modified, collected, or stored beyond what is necessary for this functionality.

  • The latest Chrome update now requires us to explicitly display these permissions, even though the functionality has not changed.

  • Unfortunately, Google controls the language in that permission window, so we’re unable to make it sound less intimidating.

New feature:

  • This update also enables desktop notifications to appear when the extension is open, which requires adding “display notifications” to the permissions list.
